What Is Neuropathy, Exactly?
Neuropathy means your peripheral nerves, the ones outside your brain and spinal cord, are damaged or not working the way they should. It can show up as burning pain, sharp shooting sensations, numbness, or that strange "pins and needles" feeling. For some people it's mild and occasional. For others it's constant and interferes with sleep, balance, and just getting through the day.
Common causes include diabetes, chemotherapy, vitamin deficiencies, injuries, and chronic compression of nerves. Sometimes the cause isn't fully clear. Either way, the nerves are struggling, and that's what treatment needs to address.
How Class 4 Laser Therapy Works
Class 4 laser therapy uses concentrated light energy to penetrate deep into tissues. Unlike lower-powered lasers, Class 4 devices can reach deeper structures, including nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue well below the skin's surface.
When that light energy reaches damaged tissue, it triggers a process called photobiomodulation. In plain terms, the cells absorb the energy and use it to do their jobs better. Blood flow improves to the area, inflammation decreases, and the cells involved in nerve repair become more active. The goal is to give your body a better environment to heal, rather than just blocking pain signals temporarily.
Does It Hurt?
Most people feel a gentle warmth during treatment, nothing uncomfortable. Sessions typically last anywhere from a few minutes to around 15 minutes, depending on the area being treated and the severity of the condition. There's no downtime afterward. You can go right back to your normal routine.
How Many Treatments Does It Take?
That varies from person to person. Some patients notice improvement after just a few sessions. Others with more advanced nerve damage may need a longer course of treatment. We assess how you're responding as we go and adjust accordingly. The honest answer is that it takes time, and results aren't guaranteed to be the same for everyone, but many patients do experience meaningful reduction in their symptoms.
What the Research Shows
There's a growing body of clinical research supporting the use of low-level and Class 4 laser therapy for neuropathy, particularly diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Studies have reported improvements in pain levels, sensation, and nerve conduction in treated patients. It's not a cure, and it doesn't work for every person in every situation, but the evidence base is solid enough that it has become a legitimate part of neuropathy care for many practitioners.
We stay current on the research because it matters. We're not going to offer a therapy we don't believe the evidence supports.
Who Might Benefit from This Treatment?
Class 4 laser therapy is worth considering if you have neuropathy symptoms that haven't responded well to other approaches, or if you're looking for a drug-free option to either replace or complement what you're already doing. It tends to work well alongside other supportive care, including chiropractic adjustments that address nerve compression in the spine, nutritional support, and lifestyle changes.
People with diabetic neuropathy, post-chemotherapy neuropathy, and idiopathic neuropathy (meaning no clearly identified cause) have all been included in studies showing positive outcomes with laser therapy.

Is It Safe?
Class 4 laser therapy is considered safe when performed by a trained provider with proper protocols. We use appropriate protective eyewear during treatment and follow established guidelines for dosing and application. It is not appropriate for use over active cancer sites, during pregnancy, or directly over certain implanted devices, so we do a thorough intake before starting any course of treatment.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
We start with a conversation. We want to understand your symptoms, how long you've had them, what you've already tried, and what your goals are. From there, we put together a plan that makes sense for your specific situation. Laser therapy may be part of that plan, or it may be one component alongside other care. Every patient is different, and we treat you that way.
If you're ready to talk about whether Class 4 laser therapy might be a good fit for your neuropathy, we'd love to hear from you. Head over to our contact page to get in touch or schedule a visit.
